⊰ Fish LARP weapon ⊱
How I even ended up making a fish-weapon:
A few years ago I was chatting with my friend D. on Messenger and she complained she only had a week to organize props for a silly LARP, among other things, to make a fish, like the one the knights had in Monty Python.
That caught my attention. I asked her, “Are they going to hit each other with that fish?”
She answered, “Yes.”
“So, it is a weapon,” I concluded. And the next thing I sent her was:
“Challenge accepted.”
She didn’t actually asked me for help and was really surprised.
After sending a few general guidelines she disappeared offline before I could change my mind, leaving me wondering what exactly I’d just got myself into.
It seems appropriate to deliver
the fish to her wrapped in newspaper.
Let’s jump ahead a bit to October 2021.
My daughters were playing Genshin Impact, and for the first time, it was possible to obtain a fish weapon in the game.
Naturally, it reminded me of the weapon I had made. I posted a photo on Reddit, and someone reached out and asked if I’d be willing to write about it for his website www.foamsmithing.com (Apparently the site is no longer there).
I was flattered, agreed, and was glad that I had photographed the process, as if I somehow knew that someone in the future might ask about it.
Technical details of the building process and materials were there.
Here, I share just the highlights and photos.
First step wea research and planning
After cutting the layers
Denim fabric used to reinforce and secure the rod
The layers glued together in press
There was a LOT of dremeling to. round everything
Scales engraved with a soldering tool
I payed attention on details like the side stripe, cloaca, and that dead-fish look
In this picture, that’s me at another LARP with the fish-weapon, after she returned it to me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t want to meet me in a dark alley, or in a well-lit one, either.
In LARP there is a guy who approve the weapons and make sure they are safe, don’t hurt etc. His look at the fish was a priceless , I reassured him to regard it as BAT with fins.
