⊰ Formal letter ⊱
In the picture, a yogurt I was quite pleased with how I managed to open.
Many, many years ago (in a galaxy far, far away), during an English class at school, we learned how to write a formal letter.
The topic I chose was: an insect found in a food product. It’s been a really long time, so of course I don’t remember exactly what I wrote, but I definitely remember the general spirit of it (and I’m pretty sure I’ve still got it somewhere, if I ever get around to sorting through my old papers).
The letter was, naturally, addressed to the manufacturer. The subject was a beetle I found in a yogurt. I began with the technical details, where it was purchased, when, the batch number, and so on. Then I wrote that I was delighted to discover in the yogurt the rare beetle that my fellow entomologists and I had been studying for years, as we tried to understand the ideal soil-food, temperature, and alkalinity conditions for its larval stage after hatching, and that thanks to them, I had finally discovered where it happens.
I concluded my heartfelt letter of gratitude by saying that I would recommend their yogurt to all my friends and colleagues, and that we would all look forward to such a pleasant surprise.
And ‘Sincerely yours’, My full name and contact details.
The teacher, who had been expecting a complaint letter, wrote that I hadn’t understood the assignment.
Years later, in my first year at university, I enrolled in a course on insect faunistics. So clearly, the early signs of my fondness for the subject were already showing back then.
