⊰ Destiny Ammo ⊱

The ammo crates in Destiny were one of those things I saw in the game and knew I wanted to make. It took me a while to finally get around to it.

Weapon ammunition is divided into three categories:
• Primary, with unlimited ammunition
• Special, in green crates (sniper, fusion, shotguns, and more)
• Heavy, in purple crates (rockets, launchers, and swords)

I made the purple one first, then convinced myself to make the green one as well. All the planning and problem-solving were already behind me, and it was basically the same thing, just smaller and green.

Like most things I make, I started this project with the mindset of It’s just a box. Then, as I got into it, I discovered it was far more complicated than I had expected. So many parts, details, lighting… You’d think I would have learned by now, but apparently not.

The unexpected challenge with this prop was the recessed stepped structure inside the “windows”. My initial idea was to glue together a series of perspective-frame layers in gradually changing sizes, but that would have been heavy and a lot of work.

I don’t know which cell in my brain came up with the solution, but it got a raise and a promotion. What I ended up doing was building trapezoidal frames from corrugated plastic sheet (Coroplast. In Hebrew: Poligal), which already had the lines I wanted. The material was lightweight, inexpensive, and the result turned out great.

Other challenges included: Where do I hide the switch? (Under the side handle.) How do I allow access for battery replacement? And so on.

I wanted to examine the ammo crate design up close and from every angle, but I ran into a funny problem: whenever I got close to one, it was automatically collected.
My solution was to bring a sniper rifle with an especially large scope and study it from a distance.
